Japa — Definition? Why Do It? When to Do It?

Japa, or the repetitive chanting of names, words, or mantras, plays a significant role in the rituals and practices of many traditions across the world. From a psychological, social, and cultural perspective, its importance is undeniable. We can observe how widely people practise Japa and how much enthusiasm surrounds it.

I've long wanted to write an essay on Japa. The purpose of this series is not to compile everything ever said about this subject, but rather to share what I understand, experience, and practise — with as much clarity, context, and reference as possible.

Naturally, there will be many references from religious traditions, but my focus here is to explore Japa from a humanistic perspective. This first chapter will begin with the basics.

What is Japa?

Japa is a practice where a particular word, name, or phrase is repeated continuously. It can be done aloud, in a whisper, or silently in the mind. One of its most popular forms is Namajapa — the chanting of a name, such as Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Allah or other revered names. Beyond divine names, people may also repeat the name of a loved one, a chosen phrase, or even a meaningful word or mantra.

Types of Japa

Traditionally, three main forms are described—

  1. Vachika Japa: chanting audibly, clearly spoken out loud.
  2. Upanshu Japa: moving the lips but keeping the sound inaudible.
  3. Manasa Japa: repeating entirely in the mind, without any movement of the lips or tongue.

Why Do Japa?

You have to decide for yourself why you should do Japa, or for how many days or how long you will do it.

If you don't feel like it, or if you don't see any special value in Japa, then it's probably better not to do it.

If you feel drawn to Japa, it can be worth exploring. I will give a few reasons for doing Japa below. You can look at these, but if the spontaneous urge doesn't come and you can't find a reason, Japa is unlikely to last long. After a few days, you might find that you're forgetting to do it or don't feel like doing it. "I'll do it in the evening instead of the morning.", "Not today, I'll do it tomorrow." — this is how it will continue. Therefore, please decide for yourself why you do Japa, based on your own circumstances and context.

There are a few reasons often cited for doing Japa. The practice of Japa affects our lives on three levels: mental, spiritual, and consequently, physical. It is not merely a religious or spiritual process, but a method for concentrating the mind, which creates a bridge between a person's body, mind, and consciousness. The main purpose of doing Japa is to control the mind, enter the depths of consciousness, and reduce restlessness.

If we want to increase our concentration, or focus our mind on a particular person, object, or subject, Japa is an effective method. But why would we want to focus on a specific thing? What is the reason?

A few possible reasons people take up Japa—

  1. When the mind feels restless or troubled by outside events or disturbances.
  2. When there is an inner urge to silently contemplate or deeply concentrate on someone or something.
  3. When one feels bothered by uncontrolled thoughts — the continuous chatter within the mind.
  4. As a way of recovering from emotional pain or losses.
  5. To remain grounded in the present, instead of slipping into nightmares from the past, fears of the future, or daydreams of an imagined world.

Sometimes, people continue simply because they love the practice itself. Over time, Japa may become so natural that it flows without deliberate effort — a state Guru Nanak named as Ajapa, spontaneous chanting.

The Rhythm of Japa

Repeating or doing Japa of the same sound, name, or phrase over and over creates a rhythm. A person can also do Japa in a specific rhythm of their own. For instance, a person is repeating the sound ॐ (Om). Now, they can repeat this Japa in various ways, such as—

ॐ — ॐ — ॐ — ॐ

Here, ॐ (Om) is being pronounced clearly one at a time.

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

Here, ॐ is being pronounced four times together. After a pause, the Japa starts again.

This can also be done this way — ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ — with a short pause after four repetitions. After 4×4=16 times or 4×27=108 times or 4×252=1008 times, take a long pause.

Let me give an example from Buddhism—

Buddhaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi.

Dhammam Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi.

Saṅghaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi

This three–refuge mantra, either together or just the first part "Buddhaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi" can be repeated with a rhythm.

Japa With Counting and Without Counting

It is common to repeat a mantra 108 times or 1008 times. Some choose other numbers such as 51, 101, or 1001. There is no rule that it must be divisible by 1 or 4. You can cycle by 2, 4, 8, 16, or any other pattern. The simplest habit is a one-cycle repetition (ॐ — ॐ — ॐ — ॐ …). The larger the cycle, the more difficult it may feel.

There is no strict obligation to count. Many people do Japa without keeping any tally. Their view is that counting each repetition—one, two, three, four—can easily draw the mind away from the mantra itself. Attention ends up fixed on the numbers instead of the practice.

In the same way, some do not even measure the time spent in Japa. Their reasoning is simple— imagine you get the chance to spend some time with a person you love very much, Would you keep checking the minutes and seconds? Would you pat yourself on the back for reaching one or two hours? Or would you simply try to remain with the beloved person for as long as possible? If so, then why measure time in Japa or meditation?

This argument is sound. If you can practise in this spirit, it is wonderful. Yet real life has its challenges. If we only say, "I will do it," but do not follow through, then nothing is gained. Often we begin with enthusiasm, but after a few days the time we spend on Japa or meditation starts shrinking — or we forget altogether. In such cases, those who set numbers or time goals are not wrong either. Their counting adds discipline and helps them stay committed.

We may therefore practise in three ways — by counting, without counting, or in a mishra (mixed) form. A mishra or mixed method means setting a baseline, such as "at least 108 repetitions" or "at least 15 minutes daily." We can keep track of this minimum, while letting the rest of the day's practice flow without calculation. This way we build discipline without losing focus by constant counting.

Ultimately, the right method is the one we can do sincerely. Whether we count or not, the value lies in steady, heartfelt practice.

When to Practise Japa

There is no rigid rule about the exact time for Japa. You can do it whenever you feel like it, or, for convenience, you may also fix a regular slot each day.

Many people choose Brahmamuhurta — the quiet hours between 3:30 a.m. and sunrise. Some wake up early, bathe, and then sit for Japa. Others prefer the evening prayer hour, while some repeat the mantra at night before sleep, continuing until drowsiness overtakes them.

Certain occasions are also considered special. People often increase their practice on specific days such as Ekadashi, the full moon, festivals, or on personal milestones like their own or a loved one's birthday. During solar or lunar eclipses, some traditions encourage longer sessions of Japa. Similarly, devout Muslims dedicate themselves to constant Dhikr —the remembrance of Allah's names and attributes, often repeating phrases like "Allahu Akbar" — especially during the month of Ramadan while fasting.

It is also common to chant before beginning an important task, or while engaged in one. Many recite a mantra before meals — whether at lunch or dinner — as a way of offering gratitude. Others recite prayers or practise Japa before starting a journey, taking up a major project, or even right before an exam. Among students, whispering God’s name silently before the first question paper is opened is a familiar sight.

Some practise Japa simply when alone or unoccupied — so that an idle mind doesn't become the devil's workshop.

In everyday life, one may encounter needless arguments or loud exchanges. Often people raise their voices or boast to outdo each other— "I know this, I've done that, I can do more than you." The instinct is to reply in the same tone, escalating the noise. But another response is possible— withdraw inwardly, repeat the Japa mantra silently, and reply only as much as necessary. At most, others might feel you are not giving them full attention. Yet when someone loses control, shouts, or hurls abuse, while you remain calm and answer gently, the contrast in behaviour speaks for itself.

Finally, many turn to Japa to counter certain basic instincts and subconscious mental tendencies. When troubled by adulterous sexual thoughts, jealousy, the urge to cause harm, or even a hidden delight in another's misfortune, people use chanting or meditation to redirect the mind. In this way, Japa serves both as a shield and as a remedy.

Discipline

In Japa, as in most things in life, discipline plays a crucial role. Suppose someone begins with enthusiasm, chants ten thousand times on the first day, six thousand on the second, and by the third or fourth day abandons the practice altogether. Progress in such a case will be slow, if it happens at all.

Discipline does not mean we must perform Japa at fixed hours every single day or twice daily without fail. What it does mean is that we create a rhythm of our own — a personal pattern we can sustain.

Forcing Japa with Strain

Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, the founder of Ananda Marga, observed that many people practise Japa with great tension, clenching their teeth and tightening their faces as if struggling painfully. Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar advised to chant slowly, calmly, and as naturally as possible.

This observation carries weight. Anyone who has tried Japa or meditation knows the problem. When we first begin, the mind may feel more restless than before. Today, mindfulness is a global trend, and if we start practising it, we might first notice that our mind becomes even more restless than before. When we start meditating, we might notice that before we could sit still for 20–30 minutes, but after starting meditation, we can't even sit still for 5 minutes. While describing "Raja Yoga" and "Patanjali's Yoga Sutras," Swami Vivekananda pointed out that in the initial stages of calming the mind, many thoughts wander around in a scattered manner.

The solution lies in steady, gentle practice. Do not force Japa with clenched teeth or strained effort. No one has decreed that a hundred thousand repetitions must be completed in a single day. Instead, allow the practice to grow spontaneously and sincerely.

This concludes the first chapter. In the following chapters, we shall explore other aspects of Japa in greater depth.

Festivals and Marketplace Buying–Selling

During festivals, buying and selling seem to take on a monstrous scale. Whatever the occasion, it all comes down to the same chorus: buy this, buy that, so many percent off here, a special offer there, buy one get one free, lucky draw prizes. Every festival, every corner, is flooded with it.

Hundreds, thousands of traders and contractors descend in countless ways to peddle their wares. The festival itself fades into the background, leaving only the marketplace. This all-devouring bazaar stretches out its many arms to seize you, its thick fingers grinding into your very bones. And you too, within your means, step onto this stage of endless transactions.

India's Independence Day 2025

I am writing this article on 16 August 2025. Yesterday, 15 August, was India's 79th Independence Day. Over the last fortnight, this commercial frenzy has seemed even more blatant to me.

"It's here, it's here, it's here!" — India's Independence Day. Dear friends, folks, guys, what are you waiting for? The bumper sales are on! Incredible discounts on every necessity.

Buy electronics: minimum 25% off. Fashionwear: up to 70% off. Thinking of jewellery? Buy pieces worth over one lakh rupees and take home a free 2-gram, 22-carat gold coin, engraved with the tricolour!

And this year, Independence Day fell on a Friday. Which means 16th and 17th were the weekend, and with a sick leave on the 18th, you get a long weekend holiday. Why not take an Independence Day tour — Puri, Digha, Agra, Ooty? Full packages available, hotel bookings included. Use voucher code "FREEDOM79" for unbeatable offers. And yes, if you pay with select company credit cards or via UPI, you can get up to an extra 2.5% cashback.

What, man? You're celebrating Independence Day without special dining? What an odd fellow you are! Come to our restaurant instead. This week we offer the "Royal Independence Day Platter" — includes two types of fish, chicken, mutton, egg curry, and so much more — all for only ₹1,199! And yes, it's shareable — bring a friend along. But please, no bargaining; the price is fixed.

Janmashtami 2025

Oh my, Independence Day has passed? No matter. The very next day, 16 August, it's Janmashtami. Lord Krishna himself has come to rescue you — and if you don't shop today, we'll assume you're an atheist!

Light up your home with lamps, garlands, decorations. Buy sweets, butter, laddus. Never mind your diabetes — Krishna loves them, and devotion is what counts. Didn't he say something like that in the Gita? Whatever it was, the gist remains: open your wallet.

And don't just buy for yourself! Won't you give gifts to your friends, relatives, your special ones? How selfish of you otherwise!

This Janmashtami, the perfect gift for your parents: devotional music CDs. A collection of sacred songs — pick them up today!

And what about the children? Will you not teach them about Sanatan Dharma and India's traditions? Be careful; neglect this and your child will go astray. To help, we're offering 40% off all books in our "Religion and Mythology for Children" section. Hurry!

Ummm, since you're already shopping, why not add a few OTT subscriptions for your friends? Watch how thrilled they'll be when you give them streaming access — khush hoga, shabashi dega!

A cartoon in the style of Studio Ghibli shows a young girl standing at the centre, looking both startled and uneasy. Around her drift bright bubbles carrying adverts, discount slogans, 'lucky draw' deals and 'buy one get one free' offers. Mixed in with them are red, demon-like faces, angry emojis, symbols of love, and broken hearts. Behind the scene the Indian flag waves, tying the picture to a festival mood while at the same time mocking its commercial takeover.

The Ongoing Spectacle

And so it goes. Whatever the occasion, everything becomes a commodity. Your emotions too are packaged for sale. Either you are a seller, or you are the target audience.

We cannot object to human emotions like love, respect, and faith. One can express their emotions in whatever way they want unless it disturbs others. The problem is that these shrewd sellers tie every festival to their products. As if the only way to validate your emotions is to consume what they sell. As if the measure of your love is simply how much you spend. If you're poor, or unwilling to spend, your affection apparently counts for nothing.

Ubiquity

This marketplace is everywhere. Posters in neighbourhood alleys, shops, marketplaces. Advertisements on TV, on every website, on Facebook. Search for anything on Google and, lo and behold, ads on that very thing follow you into your reading feed.

During festivals this assault intensifies. There is no escape. You may keep your eyes and ears shut in the streets, resolve not to turn on the television. Still, they will find you — making phone calls with festival offers, slipping into your inbox, pinging you on WhatsApp.

The "Unsafe Space"

One might argue, what's wrong with it? Businesses will advertise according to their size and market capitalisation. If you don't like it, just ignore it. No one is forcing you to participate.

Well, there's some logic in that, I suppose. Yet two problems remain. First, the market is all-encompassing. It manipulates your emotions, pressures you into social conformity. Escaping it is not that easy.

Second, it creates an unsafe space. You may have heard policies on "safe spaces" and "unsafe spaces" in your office or college. I am convinced that this relentless commercialisation of human emotions and festivals makes every space unsafe. Where any particular place churns with buying and selling, profit and loss, tricks and schemes — how can the same place remain a refuge — like the child at rest on the mother's lap — a safe space? Such an expectation is nothing but an illusion.

Sale!

Swapna Dutta, my Mother: Chapter Four, Part III

The Śrāddha ceremony for my Mother was performed on Thursday, 8 August 2025 (22 Śrāvaṇa 1432). According to the lunar calendar, the day (tithi) remained under Śukla Chaturdaśī until 1:28 pm, after which Pūrṇimā began at 1:29 pm. Thus, the first part of the Śrāddha took place under the Chaturdaśī tithi, and the remainder under Pūrṇimā.

In the first and second parts of this fourth chapter, I wrote about "Śrāddha and Śraddhā" (Śrāddha and Reverence) and "Ghāṭkāj" (ritualistic water rites) respectively. This third part focuses on the day of the Śrāddha itself.

Viveknagar Kali Temple

The Śrāddha ceremony took place at Viveknagar Kali Temple in the Jadavpur area — a well-known temple in the locality. Originally established as a Kali temple, it is still popularly called Viveknagar Kali Mandir or Kalibari, though the complex now houses idols of several other deities. Its official name is "Viveknagar Devalaya". Founded in 1950 (Bengali year 1357), it is registered as Society No. S/9228.

A photograph shows the temple — a two-storey pink building with a green roof, large arched windows, and an iron-grilled veranda on the ground floor. In front is an open space with a few bicycles; on one side, branches of a tree; on the other, the temple's spire.

Inside, the Kali idol is enshrined in a marble-lined sanctum, surrounded by commemorative plaques on the walls and floor. She is dressed in red, with a sun-disc design behind her head. Two windows — one wooden, one grilled — flank the sanctum, whose entrance is framed by ornate woodwork.

The temple also contains numerous memorial plaques, such as that of Anirban Bhattacharya (Tukai) — born 7 October 1983, died 25 June 2007 — inscribed in Bengali with words of farewell and his mother's grief and prayers. These plaques preserve the memories of many lives.
There are many memorial plaques on the walls and floors inside the temple.
These plaques carry the memories of many people—many lives.

The Venue for the Śrāddha

For the ceremony, we hired the temple's first-floor space. There were two medium-sized rooms, a connecting balcony, a room to be used as a kitchen, and a toilet. My uncle, Shri Subhabrata Bhattacharyya, took a video of the place two days before the Śrāddha. I'm providing it below, with his voice in Bengali in the background.

Śraddhā — Offering Reverence

The Śrāddha ceremony began at 10:40 am under the guidance of priest Shri Papan Chakraborty. At the start, my uncle and I were present. Following the priest's directions, I started the traditional offerings, chanted mantras, and prayed.

Praṇām

During the Śrāddha, repeated prostrations were offered to Lord Vishnu. The principal mantra was—

Translation: Salutations to Lord Vāsudeva (Vishnu/Krishna).

After Vishnu, homage was paid to all deities — Lord Shiva, the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Yama, the ancestors (Pitṛs), and the truth-seeking sages.

Prāyaścitta

The Prāyaścitta (repentance) stage involved reciting mantras and resolving that if any mistakes, lapses of attention, or breaches of scripture had occurred during the mourning period, they be forgiven.

Ṣoḍaśa Dāna (Sixteen Offerings)

The next major stage was making sixteen symbolic and essential offerings for the departed's well-being in the afterlife:

  1. Rice or staple grain (with five types of sweets)
  2. Uttariya cloth (such as a shawl)
  3. Water pot (kalaśa)
  4. Garments (sari or dhoti)
  5. Lamp
  6. Vegetables and cooking ingredients — spices, salt, mustard oil
  7. Gold (often symbolically as coins)
  8. Silver (symbolically as coins)
  9. Land (symbolically as coins)
  10. Footwear
  11. Betel leaves (tāmbūla)
  12. Umbrella (chatra)
  13. Fragrance (e.g., sandalwood)
  14. Garland or white flowers (e.g., tuberose)
  15. Fruits (often five kinds favoured by the departed)
  16. Bed or bedding

The items for the Ṣoḍaśa Dāna may vary slightly depending on different communities, beliefs, and ritual procedures. These offerings are given for the deceased so that they do not lack anything in their journey to the afterlife. These gifts symbolise life's essentials — just as parents once provided these to their children, the children now ensure the departed parent lacks nothing on the journey beyond.

I don't know the practical use of these things — how the person for whom these items are given will use them. However, from a romantic or humanistic perspective, I find this effort to be very meaningful and touching.

This photo shows the sixteen offerings laid out for a Śrāddha ceremony. On a bed, various items are arranged, such as a dhoti, a shawl, rice, fruits, vegetables (brinjal, cucumber), sesame seeds, lentils, jaggery, salt, oil, yoghurt, and honey. In the middle, a brass pot, a brass bowl, a wall clock, and a photo are visible.
Ṣoḍaśa Dāna (Sixteen Offerings) for my Mother

Not all Śrāddhas involve Ṣoḍaśa Dāna (sixteen offerings); other types exist, such as Tridāna (three offerings — food, clothing, water), Chaturdāna (four offerings — food, clothing, water, fruit), and royal offer (including cattle, gold, silver, and land). For my Mother's Śrāddha, I performed Ṣoḍaśa Dāna.

Piṇḍadāna

The third stage was Piṇḍadāna — making rice balls with raw rice, sesame seeds, banana, and sweets, offered as sustenance to the soul for strength on its journey. Usually three generations are honoured — the departed, their parents, and grandparents. If anyone in the lineage died tragically or without a Śrāddha, prayers are also made for their peace.

Piṇḍadāna affirms the lineage and bonds between generations.

Here, I was making piṇḍas (sacred riceballs) during the Piṇḍadāna ritual.

Bhagavad Gītā Recitation

On the day of my Mother's Śrāddha, alongside the main ritual of offering respects, an arrangement was made for the recitation of the Bhagavad Gītā. Shri Abhijit Mukhopadhyay, a priest of the Viveknagar Kali Temple, was reciting the Bhagavad Gītā parallel to the Śrāddha ceremony.

Tributes from Relatives and Acquaintances

Relatives and acquaintances offered floral tributes before my Mother's photograph.

This is a scene of relatives and acquaintances paying respects to my mother Swapna Dutta's photo on the day of her Śrāddha. In the photo, two pictures of my mother are placed within a huge garland of white tuberoses. a bouquet of tuberoses and an earthen pot, both used as offerings, are also visible next to the garland.
Floral tributes for my Mother

My cousin sister, Iman Bhattacharyya, played a special role, offering homage and praying for her soul's peace.

Iman Bhattacharyya participated in the Śrāddha and offered tributes to my Mother.
The recitation of the Gītā took place in parallel.

After the main Śrāddha rituals and mantra recitations, a meal was arranged for the relatives, acquaintances, and well-wishers who were present. A total of 72 people were present at my Mother's Śrāddha ceremony, besides the priests and the catering staff. Their presence during this difficult time was deeply supportive The Śrāddha achieved its completeness by bringing everyone together to pray for the peace of my Mother's soul.

In the photo, four people are sitting on chairs in a room. The first person on the left is wearing a dhoti and a white vest and is holding a bag. The other three are wearing shirts and trousers. No one has shoes or slippers on their feet. The room has green walls and a red floor, and more people and an open window are visible in the background.

Concluding Remarks

I feel a sense of weariness within me. A dull, heavy ache is lingering.

With this, the third part of the fourth chapter — the Day of Śrāddha — comes to an end.

Charaiveti.
