Japa — Some Thoughts on Contemplation

This is the third chapter in the series on Japa. In any task we take up, contemplation or concentration is of utmost importance. All fields of study, as well as the wisest people, including academics, are in agreement on this point.

Contemplation is a vast subject in itself. It will keep returning to our discussions from time to time. In this chapter, I only attempt to touch upon a few aspects.

Sri Ramakrishna and Rani Rashmoni's Distraction

Rani Rashmoni (1793–1861) of Janbazar, Calcutta (presently Kolkata), was a well-known landowner (zamindar). After the death of her husband, Rajchandra Das, she took charge of the estate herself. She became famous as a patron of public works and for her compassion for the poor. She was also the founder of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, and one of the chief benefactors of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa (1836–1886).

In 1855, after establishing the temple at Dakshineswar, Rani Rashmoni appointed Ramakrishna as its head priest. From then on, Ramakrishna poured all his time and energy into worship and spiritual practice.

On one occasion, Rashmoni came to the temple to have darshan of the Mother. Worship was going on. She stood before the deity, but to everyone's shock, Ramakrishna suddenly stepped forward and slapped her. The assembly was taken aback. What had he done! How could a priest raise his hand against such an eminent patroness?

This incident finds mention in Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita, in the entry of 16 October 1882. In Ramakrishna's own words—

One day Rashmoni came to the temple. She entered the shrine. At the time of worship, she would sometimes ask me to sing a song or two. As I was singing, I noticed she was distracted, picking flowers absent-mindedly. At once, I gave her two quick slaps. She stood with folded hands, startled and embarrassed.

After this, Ramakrishna asked her calmly, "Even here, you are lost in such thoughts?" Rashmoni, unable to reply, grew conscious of her mistake and turned her attention back to the worship.

What actually happened that day was that while Rani Rashmoni had come to Dakshineswar and joined the worship of Kali, her mind was preoccupied with her work—the various duties, profits, losses, and legal cases of her estate. Even though she was physically present in front of the idol of Kali, her attention was not there. Ramakrishna noticed this lack of focus and sought to draw her back, firmly but with concern.

Covering the Head at the Gurdwara

Anyone who enters a Gurdwara knows that covering the head is a must. It may be with a turban, scarf, handkerchief, or the corner of a shawl—anything suitable.

This practice is not merely external. Explanations are many. First, reverence—to bow before the Guru Granth Sahib and the Gurus. Second, humility—covering the head symbolises veiling one's pride, a reminder not to inflate the ego.

I myself have deep respect for the generosity of the Sikh faith. Having visited various Gurdwaras for a long time and contemplating the subject, it strongly occurs to me that there is another important reason for covering the head at the Gurdwara.

The head is the symbol of thought. To be asked, "Cover your head here," may also mean— put away the stream of restless thoughts. In this sacred space, let the mind be at rest in contemplation of the Guru.

English: Nanak's name is a ship; whoever boards it crosses surely to the far shore.

But to board such a ship, contemplation is needed. In the Gurdwara, in the presence of the Gurus, one must set aside every other concern and fully contemplate the Divine.

Japa and the Need for Contemplation

There was a time when I participated in a number of large office or brainstorming meetings. From my experience in these expensive gatherings, which I am sure you have also noticed, most people do not pay attention. They are physically present in the meeting hall, but their minds seem to be somewhere else. In some cases, I have seen laptops and mobiles banned during meetings. But that does not seem to increase the participants' contemplation much.

The main subject of this series of articles is Japa. During Japa, contemplation is absolutely essential. In this chapter, I have described two instances: Rani Rashmoni's temporary lack of contemplation and views on covering the head at the Gurdwara. When we do Japa, we must discard all other thoughts. Intense contemplation is needed. If one cannot reach this state all at once, an effort must be made to increase contemplation gradually. The head must be fully covered, as they say at the Gurdwara.

Thus ends the third chapter in this series on Japa.

Japa — What to Chant?

This is the second chapter of the Japa, Namajapa, or Dhyānajapa series. In the first chapter, I discussed the definition and reasons for practising Japa. Now, in this chapter, I shall take up the question: what exactly should one chant? I shall try to explain with examples and details.

Japa — In Quest of a Word

To begin Japa, you first need a word. It could be one word, a group of words, or even a name. However, in the end, they are all words.

It is true that repetition does not always have to be with words. One may also focus on images or feelings. Yet, word-repetition is the most common, the most popular, and usually the easiest form. Dwelling on an image or on a feeling is not the subject of this chapter, but let me give a brief example. Suppose you are fond of someone: you keep recalling that beloved person's face again and again, their smile appearing in your mind's vision. Here, you are not necessarily repeating their name; you are just holding on to an image. That is visual Japa. Similarly, if you return again and again to a particular feeling, it becomes emotional or feeling Japa.

Visual or feeling Japa does not have to be practised separately. Through the Japa of specific words, you can also practise different levels like name-form, name-quality, form-quality, and so on.

Japa — With Meaning or Without?

When you choose a word, it may or may not carry meaning. In most cases, people repeat meaningful words because they evoke images in the mind. For instance, suppose you repeat a name. Along with the name, your mind may bring up a form. If I say the name several times—

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

The mind at once recalls a familiar picture of Jesus. Alongside may appear events from his life or fragments of his teachings.

Another example—

Satnam Waheguru.
(Punjabi Gurmukhi:

This sacred invocation of Sikhism slowly fills the mind with a serene, spiritual atmosphere. Saying "Waheguru" does not necessarily bring up a fixed image of God, as Sikhism does not have a universally accepted image or idol of God. Instead, a pure, uplifting presence arises.

A traditional painting of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru, seated in a calm and meditative posture. He has a white beard, wears a patterned robe and turban, and is shown with a gentle expression. The artwork reflects peace, devotion, and the spiritual essence of Sikh teachings.
Guru Nanak gave great importance to name-chanting (Namajapa).

So, when you practice Japa, you can use meaningful words. For example—

Theme Words for Japa
Divine Names Ram, Krishna, Kali, Allah, Jesus, Buddha, Nanak, Durga, Bhavani, and so on. These may be repeated singly or in combinations like Hare Krishna, Radha-Krishna.
Feelings

Words like love, power, victory, valour, and courage can be used. You can choose any such word.

Phrases like—

  • Shivoham (I am Shiva),
  • Aham Brahmasmi (I am Brahman),
  • Charaiveti (keep moving forward),
  • Vandemataram (recalling the motherland of India),
  • Allahu Akbar (Allah is great),
  • La Ilaha Illallah (there is no deity but Allah),
  • Buddham Sharanam Gacchami (I go to the refuge of the Buddha),
  • Hallelujah (praise be to God),
  • Baba Naam Kevalam (in memory of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar),
  • Ramakrishna Sharanam (recalling Shri Ramakrishna),
  • Jai Shri Gurumaharajki Jai, and similar phrases, can also be chanted.
Inspiring personalities

Shivaji Maharaj, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Mother Teresa, Mansur al-Hallaj, Socrates, Isaac Newton — any figure who gives you strength.

One's own parents, children, teacher, or beloved may be remembered.

Seed syllables & mantras Hrim, Klim, Aim, Krim, and Gam (linked with Kali, Krishna, Durga, Lakshmi, and others).

One may also repeat sounds without meaning, like Trara, Aiyu, Omi, Brihmi. In such cases the mind is not tied to a definite form. If meaningful words cause the mind to become restless, meaningless sounds can help anchor attention.

Whatever the choice, the real question is how much devotion and attention one can bring into regular practice. Without love, even grand names uttered endlessly may not lead to much progress.

The Hare Krishna Mahamantra

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), a great figure of the Bhakti movement, spread the practice of remembering God through Japa. He gave the Hare Krishna Mahamantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare.
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

This is more than mere repetition. With its rhythm, cadence, syllables, and meaning, it is a profoundly powerful mantra. When repeated, the sound merges naturally with breathing and heartbeat. Unlike some other words, it does not cause strain or agitation; instead it flows with ease. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu selected and strung together the choicest flowers into one garland — the Mahamantra.

Following the Great Teachers

Across religions one finds great mantras: the Shiva Stotram, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, the Buddhist Trisharana. (IAST: Mahājano Yena Gatah Sa Panthāh) — follow the path trodden by the great ones. You are free to choose any word or phrase, but there is special value in using what has already been sanctified by tradition.

The Meaning of Words and Their Effect on the Mind

Let me give you an interesting piece of information. When you repeatedly utter a word, it has an effect on your mind. So, from a psychology perspective, you should carefully decide what password you will use for your online accounts or devices. If you use a strong and positive word as a password, it can have a positive effect on your mind since you are using it repeatedly. On the other hand, using a negative or weak word can diminish your mental strength.

There is a concept in psychology called priming. Priming is a process where a stimulus (like a word) influences thoughts or behaviour. Please pay attention when choosing the name, word, or phrase you use for Japa.

A historical Mughal-style painting showing the execution of Mansur al-Hallaj, the famous Sufi mystic. He is depicted tied to a wooden frame, surrounded by soldiers and onlookers. Some people watch in sorrow while others appear stern. The scene symbolises his martyrdom for proclaiming "Ana al-Haqq" (I am the Truth), a statement of divine unity that cost him his life.

Should I Chant the Name of a Loved One?

You can certainly chant the name of a loved one. You can use the names of your Guru (teacher), mother, father, etc., and your relationship with them in your Japa. One advantage of this method is that, since you have direct personal experience with that person, your mind can easily focus. Your mind will not be in a state of indecision.

However, this method can also have a significant drawback in some cases. For instance, if one keeps remembering a beloved figure, but later feels neglected or disappointed by them, the Japa practice could suffer a major setback. Perhaps after some time, one might even stop their Japa and contemplation. This issue is less likely to occur with relationships like mother, father, or Guru. In any relationship, the greater one's expectations, the higher the possibility of disappointment and hurt!

With this, let's conclude the second chapter of the series on Japa.

Swapna Dutta, my Mother: Fifth Chapter

I notice a shortfall, a sense of absence. A shortage of time, of sympathy, of attention, of Love.

It's as if we're clearly telling each other, "No, mate, I don't have any time for you. Your path and mine are different. Your life and mine are different. There's no place for you."

It is as though our conversations exist only to figure out what can be gained from the other, what benefits or advantages can be extracted. Networking, after all, must be done.

So we weigh each other constantly—appearance, charm, scent, ability, strength, intelligence. We measure, compare, judge. "Ah, so much money in your bank! Oh, you know such important people! Wow, you are beautiful!" And on and on, we're constantly measuring.

On top of everything else sits the boil of false ideologies and beliefs. "You are left-handed, I am right-handed." "You support one political party, I stand with the other." "You eat dosa in the morning, I have idli." Even the smallest difference, once spotted, becomes enough reason to say straight away— "Now you get lost."

If it stopped there, it would still be tolerable. But once a difference is noticed, out come the criticism, the scolding, the mockery and ridicule. Reasons may exist, or may not—either way, no one is spared. And it goes on endlessly.

It is as if our chief duty as human beings has become catching each other's mistakes, finding faults, criticising, and wounding one another with humiliation.

There is no sympathy. As for Love—there is none at all.

A woman named Swapna Dutta is standing on a wet pavement. She is dressed in a bright yellow sari and has a mask covering her face. Behind her rises a vast, ornate building with domes, pillars, and arches—the Vidhana Soudha of Bengaluru. The sky is overcast. A busy road, with a car and a three-wheeled autorickshaw among other vehicles blurred in motion, separates her from the building. The scene suggests that it has rained recently, as both the road and the pavement are still wet.

Shortage of Time

There is no time to waste. No time to listen to you. No time to understand your feelings. No time to sit with you or stand by your side. Yet there is always enough time to throw in some careless comment without knowing or understanding your situation. And the essence of all such comments is the same— "I know, you don't. I am right, you are wrong."

There is no time. In an hour I have a video call. The day after tomorrow there is a conference I must attend. The weekend has a party lined up. I must debate in a Facebook group. I must watch reels on Instagram. So, naturally, there is no time for you.

The moment some flaw or slip is spotted—or even when nothing is wrong—there is no time left for you.

Shortage of Sympathy

Sympathy could mean feeling another's emotions as though they were your own. But there is none. No shared feeling. Emotions seem to belong to a completely different hemisphere. In the game of chess, if you are white, I must be black. This is how we live—estranged, unfeeling.

Shortage of Attention

I can't give you any attention. I have neither the will nor the time to pay attention to your work or your concerns, to truly listen to what you say. Do not expect attention—I cannot spare it.

Shortage of Love

Love? That is an illusion. You dare to ask for Love as well? Your demands are hardly small! You live without even a hut, and dream of a palace. You have not even dry bread, yet you crave royal food on a silver plate with a golden spoon!

Love never was. It is not here now. It will not be there in the future. What does it even mean if you bring up Love?

The photo shows a woman named Swapna Dutta standing on a wide stretch of wet sand by the sea. She is facing forward, looking directly at the camera. She is wearing a white and golden sari. Behind her is the busy scene of a beach, with countless makeshift stalls and small huts covered in colourful awnings, suggesting a marketplace or vendor area. People are seen walking and gathering around these stalls. Further back, to the left of the frame, there is a row of trees and some piles of stones. The sky appears clear and sunny, and the overall impression is of a crowded, lively beach atmosphere.

(Perhaps) Your Question...

Perhaps right now you are thinking of asking—

You keep saying this is missing, that is missing. You keep pointing out emotional shortfalls. But what about you? What are you doing yourself? You put the whole world on trial, yet what do you give to anyone?

I was waiting for this very question. You took so long to finally ask it!

And now that you have, do you know what? If you had told me the same things—that there is no sympathy, no Love, and so on—I too would probably have tried to silence you by asking the very same thing— "And you, what are you doing? What are you giving anyone?" Amusing, isn't it?

Please note one more thing. In this writing so far, I have not made it clear who exactly is saying these complaints, who is asking these questions. Because I know these shortages do not belong to just one person. I know that you too, sometimes or on a regular basis, feel them in your own life. Therefore, please do not silence your own voice by asking "And what are you doing?"

My Mother — Swapna Dutta

At one point I thought of making each of the above paragraphs longer. Adding quotations, details, and examples—stretching them out more. But no, there is no need. I know, if you wish, you can take each part into your own thoughts, shaping it with your own experiences.

Now let me speak of my Mother. All these shortages I have mentioned—the lack of time, of sympathy, of attention, of Love—I too feel them deeply. I felt them before, and now I feel them even more strongly.

On Sunday, 27 July 2025, my Mother, Swapna Dutta, passed away. Today marks twenty-five days since her death. When I look back at those days, I see—understand—that in my Mother's behaviour towards me, not one of these shortages existed. There was no shortage of time. No shortage of sympathy or attention. No shortage of Love.

The problem is, my Mother is gone. And with her, the only bond I had where things were never lacking has also gone.

Well, I will not continue my cry here. However, I think this whole thing is putting too much pressure on my mind.

And that is all. Thus ends the fifth chapter.

(I don't feel like writing this word today, but I'll force myself to type) Charaiveti.

Japa — Definition? Why Do It? When to Do It?

Japa, or the repetitive chanting of names, words, or mantras, plays a significant role in the rituals and practices of many traditions across the world. From a psychological, social, and cultural perspective, its importance is undeniable. We can observe how widely people practise Japa and how much enthusiasm surrounds it.

I've long wanted to write an essay on Japa. The purpose of this series is not to compile everything ever said about this subject, but rather to share what I understand, experience, and practise — with as much clarity, context, and reference as possible.

Naturally, there will be many references from religious traditions, but my focus here is to explore Japa from a humanistic perspective. This first chapter will begin with the basics.

What is Japa?

Japa is a practice where a particular word, name, or phrase is repeated continuously. It can be done aloud, in a whisper, or silently in the mind. One of its most popular forms is Namajapa — the chanting of a name, such as Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Allah or other revered names. Beyond divine names, people may also repeat the name of a loved one, a chosen phrase, or even a meaningful word or mantra.

Types of Japa

Traditionally, three main forms are described—

  1. Vachika Japa: chanting audibly, clearly spoken out loud.
  2. Upanshu Japa: moving the lips but keeping the sound inaudible.
  3. Manasa Japa: repeating entirely in the mind, without any movement of the lips or tongue.

Why Do Japa?

You have to decide for yourself why you should do Japa, or for how many days or how long you will do it.

If you don't feel like it, or if you don't see any special value in Japa, then it's probably better not to do it.

If you feel drawn to Japa, it can be worth exploring. I will give a few reasons for doing Japa below. You can look at these, but if the spontaneous urge doesn't come and you can't find a reason, Japa is unlikely to last long. After a few days, you might find that you're forgetting to do it or don't feel like doing it. "I'll do it in the evening instead of the morning.", "Not today, I'll do it tomorrow." — this is how it will continue. Therefore, please decide for yourself why you do Japa, based on your own circumstances and context.

There are a few reasons often cited for doing Japa. The practice of Japa affects our lives on three levels: mental, spiritual, and consequently, physical. It is not merely a religious or spiritual process, but a method for concentrating the mind, which creates a bridge between a person's body, mind, and consciousness. The main purpose of doing Japa is to control the mind, enter the depths of consciousness, and reduce restlessness.

If we want to increase our concentration, or focus our mind on a particular person, object, or subject, Japa is an effective method. But why would we want to focus on a specific thing? What is the reason?

A few possible reasons people take up Japa—

  1. When the mind feels restless or troubled by outside events or disturbances.
  2. When there is an inner urge to silently contemplate or deeply concentrate on someone or something.
  3. When one feels bothered by uncontrolled thoughts — the continuous chatter within the mind.
  4. As a way of recovering from emotional pain or losses.
  5. To remain grounded in the present, instead of slipping into nightmares from the past, fears of the future, or daydreams of an imagined world.

Sometimes, people continue simply because they love the practice itself. Over time, Japa may become so natural that it flows without deliberate effort — a state Guru Nanak named as Ajapa, spontaneous chanting.

The Rhythm of Japa

Repeating or doing Japa of the same sound, name, or phrase over and over creates a rhythm. A person can also do Japa in a specific rhythm of their own. For instance, a person is repeating the sound ॐ (Om). Now, they can repeat this Japa in various ways, such as—

ॐ — ॐ — ॐ — ॐ

Here, ॐ (Om) is being pronounced clearly one at a time.

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ

Here, ॐ is being pronounced four times together. After a pause, the Japa starts again.

This can also be done this way — ॐ ॐ ॐ ॐ — with a short pause after four repetitions. After 4×4=16 times or 4×27=108 times or 4×252=1008 times, take a long pause.

Let me give an example from Buddhism—

Buddhaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi.

Dhammam Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi.

Saṅghaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi

This three–refuge mantra, either together or just the first part "Buddhaṃ Saraṇaṃ Gacchāmi" can be repeated with a rhythm.

Japa With Counting and Without Counting

It is common to repeat a mantra 108 times or 1008 times. Some choose other numbers such as 51, 101, or 1001. There is no rule that it must be divisible by 1 or 4. You can cycle by 2, 4, 8, 16, or any other pattern. The simplest habit is a one-cycle repetition (ॐ — ॐ — ॐ — ॐ …). The larger the cycle, the more difficult it may feel.

There is no strict obligation to count. Many people do Japa without keeping any tally. Their view is that counting each repetition—one, two, three, four—can easily draw the mind away from the mantra itself. Attention ends up fixed on the numbers instead of the practice.

In the same way, some do not even measure the time spent in Japa. Their reasoning is simple— imagine you get the chance to spend some time with a person you love very much, Would you keep checking the minutes and seconds? Would you pat yourself on the back for reaching one or two hours? Or would you simply try to remain with the beloved person for as long as possible? If so, then why measure time in Japa or meditation?

This argument is sound. If you can practise in this spirit, it is wonderful. Yet real life has its challenges. If we only say, "I will do it," but do not follow through, then nothing is gained. Often we begin with enthusiasm, but after a few days the time we spend on Japa or meditation starts shrinking — or we forget altogether. In such cases, those who set numbers or time goals are not wrong either. Their counting adds discipline and helps them stay committed.

We may therefore practise in three ways — by counting, without counting, or in a mishra (mixed) form. A mishra or mixed method means setting a baseline, such as "at least 108 repetitions" or "at least 15 minutes daily." We can keep track of this minimum, while letting the rest of the day's practice flow without calculation. This way we build discipline without losing focus by constant counting.

Ultimately, the right method is the one we can do sincerely. Whether we count or not, the value lies in steady, heartfelt practice.

When to Practise Japa

There is no rigid rule about the exact time for Japa. You can do it whenever you feel like it, or, for convenience, you may also fix a regular slot each day.

Many people choose Brahmamuhurta — the quiet hours between 3:30 a.m. and sunrise. Some wake up early, bathe, and then sit for Japa. Others prefer the evening prayer hour, while some repeat the mantra at night before sleep, continuing until drowsiness overtakes them.

Certain occasions are also considered special. People often increase their practice on specific days such as Ekadashi, the full moon, festivals, or on personal milestones like their own or a loved one's birthday. During solar or lunar eclipses, some traditions encourage longer sessions of Japa. Similarly, devout Muslims dedicate themselves to constant Dhikr —the remembrance of Allah's names and attributes, often repeating phrases like "Allahu Akbar" — especially during the month of Ramadan while fasting.

It is also common to chant before beginning an important task, or while engaged in one. Many recite a mantra before meals — whether at lunch or dinner — as a way of offering gratitude. Others recite prayers or practise Japa before starting a journey, taking up a major project, or even right before an exam. Among students, whispering God’s name silently before the first question paper is opened is a familiar sight.

Some practise Japa simply when alone or unoccupied — so that an idle mind doesn't become the devil's workshop.

In everyday life, one may encounter needless arguments or loud exchanges. Often people raise their voices or boast to outdo each other— "I know this, I've done that, I can do more than you." The instinct is to reply in the same tone, escalating the noise. But another response is possible— withdraw inwardly, repeat the Japa mantra silently, and reply only as much as necessary. At most, others might feel you are not giving them full attention. Yet when someone loses control, shouts, or hurls abuse, while you remain calm and answer gently, the contrast in behaviour speaks for itself.

Finally, many turn to Japa to counter certain basic instincts and subconscious mental tendencies. When troubled by adulterous sexual thoughts, jealousy, the urge to cause harm, or even a hidden delight in another's misfortune, people use chanting or meditation to redirect the mind. In this way, Japa serves both as a shield and as a remedy.

Discipline

In Japa, as in most things in life, discipline plays a crucial role. Suppose someone begins with enthusiasm, chants ten thousand times on the first day, six thousand on the second, and by the third or fourth day abandons the practice altogether. Progress in such a case will be slow, if it happens at all.

Discipline does not mean we must perform Japa at fixed hours every single day or twice daily without fail. What it does mean is that we create a rhythm of our own — a personal pattern we can sustain.

Forcing Japa with Strain

Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, the founder of Ananda Marga, observed that many people practise Japa with great tension, clenching their teeth and tightening their faces as if struggling painfully. Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar advised to chant slowly, calmly, and as naturally as possible.

This observation carries weight. Anyone who has tried Japa or meditation knows the problem. When we first begin, the mind may feel more restless than before. Today, mindfulness is a global trend, and if we start practising it, we might first notice that our mind becomes even more restless than before. When we start meditating, we might notice that before we could sit still for 20–30 minutes, but after starting meditation, we can't even sit still for 5 minutes. While describing "Raja Yoga" and "Patanjali's Yoga Sutras," Swami Vivekananda pointed out that in the initial stages of calming the mind, many thoughts wander around in a scattered manner.

The solution lies in steady, gentle practice. Do not force Japa with clenched teeth or strained effort. No one has decreed that a hundred thousand repetitions must be completed in a single day. Instead, allow the practice to grow spontaneously and sincerely.

This concludes the first chapter. In the following chapters, we shall explore other aspects of Japa in greater depth.
